Anyone in the market for a French Oven has no doubt heard of Le Creuset. Le Creuset is a company mainly known for producing high quality French ovens.  These are similar to 'Dutch Ovens', but these are produced in France.  Le Creuset first started making these French Ovens in 1925 from it\'s foundry in Fresnoy le Brand, France, and continue to produce them in France to this day.

Key Features of the 5-1/2 Quart French Oven:
• Heavy Enameled Cast-Iron French Oven with lid
• Product dimensions:10 x 10/8 x 4 inches; 10.5 pounds
• Oven safe to 350 degrees(you can buy a seperate stainless-steel handle if you need higher temp.)
• Won\'t hold food odors or stains
• The 94 customers that have reviewed it on Amazon have given it an average 4.5 out of 5 stars

This dish is large enough for most meals.  The 5-1/2 Quart Oven is probably the most popular size of the Le Creuset French oven, as it big, but does not take up as much space as the 7-1/4 Quart.
For someone looking to get a braise meats in, cook soups, etc., this size usually does the trick. Keep in mind too, if you have limited kitchen space, this may be a better choice for you than the larger 7-1/4 quart.
I would recommend this size to any cook that wants a cast iron dutch oven, but doesn\'t need the 7-1/4 Quart to cook for large amounts of people on a regular basis.
When you use a french oven like this the flavors created are amazing.  The ceramic cooking surface over the cast iron seasons and builds upon the flavors as time goes on, making your food taste even better every time you make it.
But don\'t worry, it will never keep the flavors from one dish and bring them to the next, as this dish is impermeable to odors and stains.
Likewise, the ceramic cooking surface keeps food from burning. You don\'t have to worry about food drying up and burning to the bottom of the pan like with other pans.
One big reason is the lid on this french oven, which fits tight and makes sure food stays tender and juicy. Dishes that may have come out dry in the past will be rich and moist when made in this Le Creuset cookware.

What Makes This French Oven So Amazing?

The key to any Le Creuset French Oven is the material it\'s made from.
This 5-1/2 Quart French Oven is made from pure enameled Cast-iron.  Anyone that knows about cast iron knows that one of it\'s biggest draws is it\'s ability to cook food evenly.
Working best at low to medium heat, a cast iron dutch oven cooks evenly and brings out complex flavors you would have never even knew the dish possessed! This heavy enamel coating gives this cast iron dutch oven a fantastic non-stick quality that will never burn your dishes.
This versatility also allows the French Oven to be heated in any way you see fit- Gas Stovetop, Ceramic, Glass, Electric, even old ranges fired by wood, coal, or oil!
